A citrine is a golden-yellow type of Quartz. It's a fairly hard stone, a 7 on the Mohs scale. The name Citrine comes from the French word citron, meaning a lemon. (Makes you wonder about the Citron cars, huh?) The shades of color range from pale yellow to dark golden to madeira orange. It is found in Brazil, Madagascar, Spain, Uruguay, Scotland, USA and Russia. Notice the richness and ranges of color in the photo below.
The yellow color comes from the presence of iron. Higher grades of citrine are darker in color. Sometimes amethyst or smoky quartz are heat-treated to reduce the level of oxidation of the iron in the quartz and change the natural color into the golden citrine shades.
